Direct Thermal vs. Thermal Transfer Technology

If you're looking to print your labels on demand, you may want to look into a dedicated roll printer. Dedicated roll printers allow you to print the exact amount of labels you need when you need them.

The two most popular formats for roll label printing are thermal transfer and direct thermal printers. Here are the key differences between them:

Thermal Transfer Printers
  • Require a thermal transfer ribbon for printing
  • Can print in color with the addition of a colored ribbon
  • Can withstand chemicals and extreme temperatures
Direct Thermal Printers
  • Don't require ink, toner, or ribbons
  • Can only print in black and white
  • Aren't recommended for high-contact use

Direct Thermal Label Options

Our direct thermal materials work well with a variety of high-speed direct thermal printers. They're available on 25mm and 76mm cores for use with a variety of brands.
